WLD Plans for Bournemouth

We are involved with two Fringe events in Bournemouth this year. We have our own WLD Fringe meeting 'Are We Nearly There Yet?' which will include a discussion of progress made since we were founded 20 years ago and will also focus on ways to get more women onto the Party Committees, where we are still severely under-represented. And we are also supporting the Amnesty Fringe meeting 'Trapped in Violence and Abuse - Is the UK Government failing to tackle violence against women?' This meeting will focus on the most vulnerable women in our society who are currently being failed by the system. Chris Huhne MP heads the list of speakers. Click on the link for more details.

A Great Day in Bath

The WLD Bath Forum, which took place last Saturday in the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, was an extremely successful event. The participants enjoyed the opportunity to listen to some excellent speakers, take part in lively discussions, network with other women and learn more about what being a LibDem activist is all about. All agreed that the venue, in one of Bath's most beautiful squares, was most attractive - and the lunch, provided by Claire and other helpers, was pretty good too!

Grief at Death of Pauline Campbell

The WLD Executive have expressed their grief at the death of the tireless prison campaigner, Pauline Campbell, who was found dead beside her daughter Sarah's grave on Thursday. Pauline was a trustee of the Howard League for Penal Reform, and took part in protests outside many prisons following Sarah's death in Styal prison in 2003.

WLD speak out against Labour tax changes

Many WLD members are very angry about the loss of the 10p tax band, in which there were many more women than men. Our President, Lorely Burt MP, says: 'Women already, on average, receive a much lower income then men. In 2004 for every £1 on average earned by men, women got just 54p. The abolition of the 10p tax rate has made things even worse for women already on low pay and women pensioners who cannot or are not prepared to claim pension credit.'

WLD at Liverpool

WLD members had an enjoyable and inspiring weekend in Liverpool. Our Fringe meeting 'This is International Women's Day!' was a great success, focussing mainly on the positive aspects of women's achievements in Britain and across the world. Read a full report at: www.wld.org.uk/pages/Liverpool2008.html Our stall attracted lots of visitors and our 'Find a Baroness' fundraising draw, with instant winnings in the form of Easter eggs, was a big hit. Several new members joined at the Conference, and we welcome them to WLD.
